Elite Akademy is a highly specialised Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy clinic which operates out of the Sports Centre. With a highly skilled team of practitioners, and headed by internationally acclaimed Kusal Goonewardena, Elite Akademy offers a personalised experience to help you achieve your fitness goals and overcome injuries.

Elite Akademy are the official Sports Physiotherapist for the Melbourne University Elite Athlete Unit – Comprising of 24 of Melbourne’s best Athletes who compete in the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, World and National Championships, and have been the head of Sports Medicine at the Melbourne University for the University Games since 2008.

meet the team

Kusal Goonewardena

For over 15 years Kusal Goonewardena has worked with athletes and teams, travelling around the world, providing his athletes with the utmost care. He provides the most up to date techniques to prevent injury, provide rapid recovery if injured, enhance performance and win.
 

His training has included:

  • Masters in Sports Physiotherapy at Latrobe University,
  • Bachelor in Physiotherapy at University of Melbourne,
  • Currently completing his PhD in Sports Performance Enhancement in Melbourne


He founded the Vigor Sports Medicine Clinics (now Elite Akademy) in Melbourne which are the only orthopaedic teaching schools for overseas trained physiotherapists in Australia. A keen lecturer and mentor he has personally helped over 1000 physiotherapists to shape their careers in sports physiotherapy.

He is currently the head of sports medicine at the University of Melbourne sports program and its elite athlete program-totalling about 400 athletes that Kusal helps fine tune and improve performance in each year. Since working with the University of Melbourne in 2002 the prestigious university has finished in the top 3 for the Australian University Games in all years bar one. It also won this national championship on 2 occasions.

 

Some career highlights:

  • Sports Physiotherapist for the Melbourne University Elite Athlete Unit – Comprising of 24 of Melbourne’s best Athletes who compete in the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, World and National Championships.
  • Founded the Vigor Sports Medicine Clinic chain in Melbourne, Australia. These are the biggest sports medicine clinics in their respective regions and have been for more than a decade.
  • Accepting candidature for his PhD at Melbourne University to be a leader in Sports Performance and Rapid Recovery.
  • Has been the head of Sports Medicine at the Melbourne University for the University Games since 2008.
  • Has taken care of more than 15,000 athletes in a career spanning over a decade.


 

 
     

NICOLE T’EN (B.Phty)

Nicole graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2011 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. She is a member of the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare (ASPAH) and the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). She is also a Ridgway Method Certified Practitioner (RMCP).
 
Clinical focus
 

  • Safe and effective return to sport and exercise
  • Evidence and research into best clinical practice
  • Return to practice and performance for musicians

Clinical experience

  • A member of the Melbourne University Sports Medicine team – helped treat and manage over 400 athletes at Australian Uni Games 2013
  • Treats the elite athletes at Melbourne University in preparation for State, National and International tournaments and championships
  • Trained in a Dance Network Foot and Ankle course
  • Trained in Level 1 & 2 Dry Needling Plus techniques
  • Trained in Lyn Watson Rehabilitation techniques

Personal Interests
Nicole enjoys the performing arts and considers herself an amateur pianist and cellist. She also has a keen interest in dance, theatre and circus. Nicole has a sporting background in tennis, which she has played competitively

 

 
     

SHAYNE CHATFIELD (B.Phty)

'Nothing makes me happier than helping clients achieve their goals and getting them back doing what they love'

Shayne graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2011 joining Elite aKademy shortly after. He is a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and is a Ridgway Method Certified Practitioner (RMCP).

  • Improving the performance of athletes
  • Return to sport and exercise in the shortest time

Clinical Experience

  • Member of the Melbourne University Sports Medicine Team - Southern University Games 2012 & 2013, Australian University Games 2012 & 2013
  • Trained in APPI Pilates Level 1
  • Trained in Record Active and Neurac
  • Treats elite athletes at The University of Melbourne

Personal interest
When he his not working Shayne is absorbing some form of audio/visual media from movies to music performances. Dancing is his main passion, which he currently competes at the State and National Level.

 

 
     
ROSS SMITH

Ross graduated form the Australian College of Sports Therapy with an Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy in 2007. He has also recently completed a Bachelor of Human Movement, majoring in Clinical Exercise from Victoria University. He is a member of the Institute of Registered Myotherapists Australia (IRMA).
 
Clinical Focus
  • Provide accurate analysis and improved recovery from injury.
  • Improving the performance of athletes.
  • Providing a great quality of care and a friendly environment.
Personal Experience
For the past 10 years Ross has been a member of the National Badminton team, and has represented Australia at events such as World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. Throughout his sporting career as an athlete he has had the benefit of working with some of the best sports medicine practitioners in Australia. He has a unique understanding of the demands of being an athlete and the importance of injury rehabilitation and recovery.
