Australian University Games Launched

20 September; Peter Walker

The 2016 Australian University Games (AUGs) start next week in Perth (25–30 September) with 337 University of Melbourne students participating in 40 teams across 23 sports.

Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil congratulated participating students on Tuesday 13 September at the official send-off event. The event allowed team mates to meet student-athletes participating in other sports and hear a few words of wisdom from those who have been to the AUGs before.
The send-off also featured the two outstanding student-athletes, chosen to lead the University’s team for this year. Track and field athlete Isabelle Napier and touch football / Australian Rules Football player Nathan Sambevski will captain the full University team on and off the field.

Napier is in her third year of study towards a Bachelor of Environments degree and has won gold at the Australian University Games for pole-vault the last two years running. She will be vaulting for a hat-trick of gold medals at the AUGs.

‘It’s a real honour to be chosen to lead the University teams’, said Napier. ‘I’m looking forward to connecting with our students on and off the field, and helping to achieve a solid representative sport performance this year’, she said.

Nathan Sambevski is a Juris Doctor student, having previously completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University. He has represented Victoria on multiple occasions and hopes to represent Australia in the future.

‘University sport is a great opportunity to connect with students from all around the country on a different level than my degree can offer’, said Sambevski.

Sport coordinator and University Team Manager Tom Lutwyche says that Napier and Sambevski were standout choices. ‘Isabelle and Nathan have represented the University on multiple occasions with great individual and team success’, he said.
