Varsity Football Kicks off Today!

14 March; Peter Walker

The University of Melbourne mens AFL team is out for revenge in the 2017 Varsity fixture, with the goal to pull the team up from its performance in 2016. Three Varsity games were played against Monash, Australian National University (ANU) and The University of Adelaide in semester 1 2016, with Melbourne bested in each game.

‘It was a pretty disappointing result last year’, said Melbourne Varsity AFL coach John Kanis, reflecting on the difficulties of 2016. ‘We suffered a little from having some stalwarts not available [due to graduating], but we also faced stiff opposition as well. Monash, ANU and Adelaide were well prepared, and the final results showed that.’

The Varsity AFL schedule continues in 2017, with an important match against The University of Sydney in addition to games against Adelaide and Monash.

The kickoff match against The University of Adelaide will be held this afternoon at Arden Street Oval (home of North Melbourne Football Club).

‘Melbourne has previously dominated Varsity AFL, taking the gold medal at Australian University Games in previous years’, said MU Sport Development Manager Rod Warnecke. ‘We hope that our Varsity team can return to winning form this year.

Our university counterparts have shown that they are taking the competition seriously, and now it is time for the Melbourne team to show their dedication,’ he continued.
