What is the On Track Program?

The University of Melbourne has created a development program with the Melbourne University Athletics Club for African Australian Secondary school Students (Years 10, 11 and 12) who aspire to participate in athletics and study at university.

 


What will participants receive through the program?
  • Mentoring and pre-tertiary educational experiences with University of Melbourne Staff and Students.
  • Support in finding out how to pursue University education
  • Weekly coaching and mentoring at the Melbourne University Athletics Club
  • FREE membership to Melbourne University Athletics Club and Athletics Victoria, allowing you to train and compete in Athletics
  • Melbourne University Athletics Club uniform

 


Outcomes

By participating in the program, participants will:

  • Be inspired to successfully complete secondary school and pursue further education
  • Gain knowledge and skills to pursue tertiary education pathways
  • Gain knowledge and skills in track and field athletics
  • Be mentored by current elite athletes
  • Connect with University staff and students
  • Establish links with other students so they can share knowledge and experience
  • Meet new friends
  • Have fun!

Key Selection Criteria
Up to 30 participants will be selected to participate in the On Track program. Participants must meet the selection criteria outlined below:
1.    Be of African descent
2.    Be in Years 10, 11 or 12
3.    Demonstrated interest in school and in pursuing further education beyond secondary school
4.    Demonstrated interest in the sport of athletics

 

Application Process

To participate in the program, students will complete and submit the application form on-line using the following link.



Program Details
Three University experience days including; 
  • Pre-Tertiary classes in a variety of the university faculties
  • University familiarisation tours
  • Advise on subject selection and requirements for specific university courses 
  • Mentoring from University of Melbourne students
Track and Field Coaching
  • Melbourne University Athletics Club coaches will offer coaching for all participants on a weekly basis
  • Participants will choose their favourite events to be coached in and work with their coach in that area
  • Train side by side with athletes of all levels including athletes who have competed for Australia
Track and Field Competitions
  • Participants will be registered with Melbourne University Athletics Club and Athletics Victoria and be able to compete together with other club members at local and state competitions
  • Participants will receive the Melbourne University Athletics Club uniform through the program
Family involvement
  • Families are welcome to come and watch and encourage the participants
  • A family BBQ will be held in early December to officially welcome all participants to the program
