Melbourne announces all-student squad for Aon Uni 7s

7 August; Aaron McNaughton

The squad for the inaugural University of Melbourne Aon 7s Series was released last week, with the all-student team comprising athletes from a variety of sporting backgrounds including Touch, Australian Rules Football, Athletics and Netball making up the squad of 24.

Leading the team as co-captain is first year student-athlete Annie Buntine. Annie recently completed year 12 at Peninsula Grammar and is now undertaking a Bachelor of Arts at the University. From a Touch Football background, Annie was part of the Victoria’s Women’s T League National Touch League championship team in 2016 and 2018 at ages 16 and 18 respectively and provides the team with a captain with experience and talent well beyond her years.

General Manager of Rugby Jason Jones said the team’s journey from the announcement to now has been an exciting one. “The first couple of weeks were fairly challenging with most players never having played a game of rugby, or seen a game of sevens, but to the players and coaching staff’s credit, the improvement over the last 4-6 weeks has been significant. The culture within the team that has been created already makes me feel that the program will be successful, irrespective of the scoreboard in our first season.”

Jones also noted a number of players transitioning from other sports like Reni Hicks (AFLW with Carlton), Sophia Power (Athletics, 200m sprinter) and Maggie Lind (Victorian Netball League best and fairest) who are loving the experience and add real value to the program.

The squad also includes students from several diverse backgrounds. Bachelor of Science student-athlete Emma Larsson Strom is currently studying at the University on scholarship from Sweden, while Karin Guntilake was born in Sri Lanka and is currently studying a Doctor of Medicine.

The full squad includes:
