The University of Melbourne’s Winged Victory men took on undefeated UTS in the grand final, with their Sydney competitors returning to the championship game after a heartbreaking loss to the University of Sydney in 2022. The match started with a tense back and forth, remaining tied through much of the first quarter until a rapid 16 point run on the back of four 3-pointers from Roseby gave the men are narrow lead. Eves and Bennett provided some much-needed hardihood off the bench, helping extend Melbourne’s lead to 17 going into half time. Eves dominated the glass, finishing with a season high 10 rebounds, while Bennett spotlighted his athleticism on the biggest stage of the year, earning a collection of game-changing steals, blocks, and rebounds. Despite a resurgence from UTS, fuelled by an energetic local crowd and an impressive shooting performance in the third quarter, it was the original Winged Victory duo of Joel Rimes and Matt Roseby who led the men’s scoring to hold off the opposition, combining for 41 of Melbourne’s 77 points in their 23rd and final UBL game together. Come the final buzzer, the Winged Victory men silenced the Sydney crowd and denied UTS an undefeated season, hoisting the Championship Trophy in their first finals appearance to mark the end of the University’s most successful season to date.
