Women's UBL Coach
The University of Melbourne is proud to announce the appointment of Ai Yamada as Head Coach of their UBL Women's Program, bringing an accomplished and internationally experienced basketball figure to the institution.
Yamada's basketball journey is one defined by excellence, resilience, and success at every level of the game. A former Japanese junior international, she represented her country at both the FIBA Asia U16 Championship and the FIBA U17 Women's World Championship, establishing herself as one of Japan's most talented young guards.
Her rise continued at the renowned Ohka Gakuen High School, where she was part of a historic program that captured Japan's coveted High School "Triple Crown" – winning the Inter-High Championships, National Sports Festival, and Winter Cup.
Following her school success, Yamada signed with the powerhouse JX-ENEOS Sunflowers, Japan's most decorated women's basketball club. Over five seasons, she was immersed in a championship culture, helping the club secure multiple W League Championships and Empress's Cup titles while developing alongside some of Japan's finest players.
Not content with success in her home country, Yamada challenged herself internationally, forging a professional career across Australia and Europe. She became a respected playmaker with the Albury-Wodonga Bandits, competed for Women Nyon Basket in Switzerland, and later starred in Australia's NBL1 South competition with Keilor Thunder, earning recognition for her leadership, basketball IQ, and elite shooting ability.
Now, Yamada will bring her wealth of international experience to the University of Melbourne Women's Program.
