Throughout the year, the University of Melbourne’s 10 residential colleges competed across 15 sports, all chasing the famed Tickner Cup.

Ormond College took out the Holmes Shield for women’s intercollegiate sport in 2022, marking the first time the College has done so since 2015, barring their three-way tie for the Shield in 2017, which they shared with Trinity and St. Hilda’s Colleges. Coincidently, Trinity and St Hilda’s secured second and third place respectively in women’s college sport in 2022.

Trinity College scored consistent podium finishes throughout the year to earn the Cowan Cup for men’s college sport, beating out Ormond and Queen’s Colleges who finished the year second and third overall for the men.

In a tightly contested competition between Ormond, Trinity and St. Hilda’s colleges, the race for the overall champion came down to the wire. Securing several late season victories, Ormond pulled away to narrowly escape Trinity and finish atop of the rankings, raising the august Tickner Cup after a nine year wait.

The Tickner Cup is weighted by a college’s student population, with Ormond’s 510 residents making their victory all the more impressive against Trinity’s 385 and St. Hilda’s 224 students.

The victors finished the year with 13 first place finishes, complimented by 8 second place and 6 third place efforts; of the 30 events contested throughout the year, Ormond would miss a top-3 finish in only four, taking out fourth place in three of those events.

The Tickner Cup champions earned a clean sweep across athletics and basketball, taking home gold in the men’s and women’s competitions for both, as well as the mixed athletics competition.

Ormond College also took out women’s rowing, securing first place in the First and Second VIII, with the First VIII crew recently travelling to Sydney for the Australian Boat Race; the College’s Crew dominated the University of Sydney’s Wesley College to breeze into Darling Harbour with a 23 second lead.
