Strong Showing at Uni Nationals Athletics 2023

We had some amazing moments on the Gold Coast last week. Some highlights from the competition included our Winged Victory jumpers taking out a clean sweep in the men's High Jump. Roman Anastasios (Fine Arts) who jumped a new personal best (PB) of 2.17m took the gold medal with team-mates Ben Nash (Arts) and Liam Tully (Commerce) taking out silver and bronze medals respectively. Andrew and Geraldine Buxton scholarship recipient Jaryd Clifford (Arts) led from start to finish to win gold in the 5,000m and also claimed the silver in the 1500m. Eleanor Cooney Hunt (Juris Doctor) also jumped a PB of 12.24m to win silver in the Long Jump. Chui Ling Goh (Law) won silver in the 800m while Simone Mailerdet (Arts) claimed the silver in the 5,000m. Our women’s 4x400m relay of Cassie Wang Lecouteur (Veterinary Medicine), Genevieve O’Brien (Biomedicine), Claire Hurley (Biomedicine) and Chui Ling Goh won the bronze medal.

In other strong performances, Jeevanesh Soundarajah (Engineering) just missed out on the podium, finishing 4th in the 10,000m; Cassie Wang Lecouteur finished 4th in the 200m; our women’s 4x100m Relay of Alyssa Neal (Science), Cassie Wang Lecouteur, Eleanor Cooney Hunt and Genevieve O’Brien were 4th; Jack Forer (Biomedicine) was 4th in the 800m; Eleanor Cooney Hunt was 5th in the Long Jump; Simone Mailerdet was 5th in the 1500m; Jesse Mckenna (Science) was 5th in the men’s 100m and 200m; our men’s 4x100m Relay of Ben Nash, Roman Anastasios, Liam Tully and Gus Simpfendorfer (Fine Arts) were 6th as was our 4x400m Relay of Sebastian Dahan (Arts), Gus Simpfendorfer, Jack Forer and Akon Chol (Science); and Massimo Acquaro (Architecture) was 8th in the 200m.

Our Men’s Team finished the national championship in 5th place out of 31 competing universities. Our Women’s team was 8th out of 36 universities and Overall, the University of Melbourne placed 5th. Join us in congratulating all student-athletes who did the Winged Victory proud.
