UBL Trials announced, Coaches confirmed for 2022

Students enrolled at the University of Melbourne are invited to express interest and trial for the 2022 University Basketball League Men’s and Women’s teams. Melbourne tips the season off against newcomers Federation University in Ballarat on Monday 21 March. This is the beginning of an expanded 2nd season of the UBL, with additional teams from The University of Adelaide, Curtin University, Federation University Australia and RMIT University joining the 7 foundation teams from season 1.

Grantley Bernard returns to coaching the IV Basketball program in 2022, after a brief hiatus. Grantley has over 45 years experience in Basketball, having recently coached the Melbourne University Women’s Big V team to the 2019 Division 2 Championship. Having been involved in Intervarsity at Melbourne University for more than 5 years, Grantley has overseen two Uni Nationals Silver medals (2015 and 2019) for the Women’s program.

Shawn King joins the Melbourne University IV program for the first time, having recently been appointed to coach the University’s Men’s Big V program for 2022. He has played professional basketball in Australia, China, England, France and Hong Kong. Shawn also brings a wealth of experience on the bench having coached across the Hawthorn (Big V), Dandenong (VJBL) and Chelsea (Big V) programs.

2022 UBL Trial Information

Women:

Sunday 6 Feb, 1.30pm – 3pm – East Stadium

Sunday 13 Feb, 1.30pm – 3pm – East Stadium

Men:

Sunday 13 Feb, 11am – 12.30pm – West Stadium

Sunday 20 Feb, 11am – 12.30pm – West Stadium

Trials are open to all students enrolled at the University of Melbourne for study in 2022. Interested players must complete the online EOI prior to attending trials.

Trials are open to everyone, but it is recommended players are at least Youth Big V (or equivalent level) in playing experience. The UBL program is subsidised by Melbourne University Sport, and there are no participation fees for selected squad members.

Attendees are expected to follow COVID vaccine requirements set out by the University of Melbourne to attend campus, as well as follow any required check-in protocols. If you are unable to attend due to isolation, please contact the Sport Performance Coordinator (below)
