From 22-24 April, student-athletes from across Australia gathered on the Gold Coast to compete at the 2025 UniSport Nationals event for athletics. 25 student-athletes represented the University of Melbourne across a variety of track and field events, collecting 10 medals, five being gold! Overall, the Men’s team finished 3rd the Women’s team 9th.
Two student-athletes showed their depth by placing in more than one event, middle distance runner Alex Hanigan (Bachelor of Commerce) and our sole Para-athlete, Isla Gillespie (Bachelor of Arts). Hanigan found success in both the 1500m and the 800m Men’s finals, finishing first and third respectively. Gillespie finished second in the Para Women long jump event, and third in the Open Para Women’s 100m.
On the track, Team Melbourne placed in a further six events. Jordan Gilbert (Bachelor of Science) secured a gold medal and a Personal Best in the 400m Men’s Final, while Ella Tobin (Bachelor of Science) claimed a silver medal in the Women’s 400m Final.
In two of the long-distance running events, Jamie Blackburn (Bachelor of Commerce) took home the gold in the Men’s 10,000m and Jack Ellis (Bachelor of Science) in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase, won silver medal, both recording a Personal Bests.
2024 Paris Olympian Rebecca Henderson (Doctor of Medicine) and World Junior Athletics athlete Marcus Wakim (Bachelor of Science) made it two from two for Melbourne in the 5,000m Race Walk finals. Wakim walked a Season Best time on his way to gold, while Henderson walked a Personal Best and Championship Record time in her Uni Nationals debut.
Overall, it was a successful competition for the University of Melbourne, with all student-athletes representing the University in such high esteem.
