Vale Don Knapp

The Australian university sporting community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of former UniSport Australia CEO, Don Knapp.

Don led Australian University Sport Ltd, now UniSport Australia, from 2007 to 2019. Over more than a decade of service, Don played a pivotal role in shaping the future of university sport in Australia, steering the organisation through significant reform, renewal and national impact.

Don’s most lasting legacy may be his leadership in championing the transformation of the old Australian University Games (UniGames) into the UniSport Nationals we have today. Recognising emerging risks and cultural challenges, Don authored the landmark 2017 Case for Change, a bold, research-backed proposal that reimagined the event model to prioritise athlete experience, competitive integrity, and alignment with the values of the higher education sector. His vision culminated in the launch of UniSport Nationals in 2018, a new era of student sport that refocused attention on high-quality competition and safety and realigned the organisation’s identity through the rebranding to UniSport Australia.

On behalf of Melbourne University Sport and the University of Melbourne sporting community, we extend our sincere condolences to Don’s family, friends, and former colleagues. His contribution to university sport in Australia will be remembered with deep respect and enduring gratitude.
