Elena's story
Biomedicine and Medicine alumna Elena Galiabovitch made her third Olympic appearance at Paris. The veteran shooter who competes in the Women’s 25m Pistol and 10m Air Pistol events has four Commonwealth Games medals. Elena is a physician by profession and was one of the six athletes chosen by the IOC to carry the Olympics flag at the Tokyo Opening Ceremony as a recognition of her work as a frontline worker during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elena was born in Belarus and her family moved to Australia when she was four. Her father Vladimir Galiabovitch is her coach and also of the Australian pistol team.
2018 was Elena’s most successful year. After winning two medals – a silver and a bronze – at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, she claimed the 25m pistol gold at the World Cup in Korea by winning the shoot-off. The win was made sweeter by the fact that it came off a Personal Best score.
