What is Intervarsity athletics?

  • Representing the University to compete against other Australia or International Universities in Sport

  • You must be an enrolled student studying at the University of Melbourne in 2026.

  • We select the best student-athletes who study at the Univeristy of Melbourne for our Invervarsity teams.

  • There is one major event a year, Uni Nationals Athletics Championship.

How to get involved

All new and returning students who wish to represent the University are required to sign up for the Intervarsity program each year using the form below. The information you provide will be shared with the team managers of your chosen sport so they can contact you about trials, training sessions, and important details regarding upcoming events.

Our Athletic Head Coaches

Sandro Bisetto

Sandro is qualified as a Level 5 Academy Coach. He is highly regarded within the high jump world as one of, if not, the most skilful high jump coaches in Australia.

Notably, he has coached Joel Baden to multiple World Championships and Olympic Games, and was coach to Tim Forsyth, the current mens high jump Australian record holder, at the time of his bronze medal performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Tony Brain

Tony is qualified with a Level 4 Senior Middle & Distance Coach. He is currently the Vice President of the Melbourne University Athletics Club, and specialises in middle and long distance events.

Accommodation

We will once again be staying onsite at the Gold Coast Performance Centre and our check in is booked from Tues 21rd April and check out is Friday 24nd April. This provides cover for the whole competition with a check out is on the last day of competition. We will again be providing better cooking facilities including, air fryer, rice maker, electric hot plate and pasta maker.

All athletes who register for the event are required to stay onsite at the accommodation provided by Melbourne University Sport.

For 2026, the registration fee will stay as one fixed fee allowing participants to enter unlimited events (pending qualification standards).

To develop the event experience for all attending (and following feedback received from both competitors and UTMs) several enhancements will be made to this year’s event, including:

  • An official event opening, including a Welcome to County
  • Livestream
  • World Ranking Event.

All athletes must wear the official Winged Victory Uniform for this event. If you have previously represented the University, it is the same uniform, so you would not need to purchase a new uniform. If you would like to try sizes before you purchase, please see Tony Sephton in the Sport development office, Nona Lee sports center.

Before you register for the event there are a couple of steps to complete first.

  1. Complete this form. Click here (for new and returning athletes, must be completed every year)
  2. Check you make the Qualifying Standards 2025, you will be required to show proof of when you achieved your times. These times can date back two years to account for injuries.

All athletes need to be eligible to compete in this event, which means they must be enrolled in semester one 2026.

In 2026, UniSport have released a new registration portal, and every athlete must register for the event online, using the following link. Registration for Uni Nationals Athletics. The codes to register for the mens or womens event is higlighted below.

Important Athlete Considerations.

  • All athletes should put their names down for relays, as they are worth double points in the teams competition.
  • If you make qualifying standards, please put yourself down for multiple events, (you can always withdraw later)
  • Field athletes are in high demand, so recruit your friends.

  • The process will require you to create an account.
  • Complete your personal details, upload your photo, and select your category of participation. 
  • Complete the registration steps and make payment via PayPal.
  • A guest checkout option is available for those who do not have a PayPal account.
  • Receive your confirmation of registration via email.

Please check the document below to ensure you are inside the qualification requirement and are able to provide evidence if required. The standards will be the same as in 2025 shown below.

Physio Support

As in our previous years we will have a Physio on site throughout the competition to provide support.

This includes

  • Soft tissue massage
  • Taping
  • Injury assessment
  • Recovery support between competitions
  • Consultation.
