Earlier this year, Professor Richard James concluded his 11-year tenure as a member on the Melbourne University Sport Advisory Board, leaving behind a legacy centred around strengthening the levels of equity and accessibility throughout higher education and university sport.
An avid sportsperson himself, Richard James represented Australia in Athletics, where in 1980, he became the Men’s 100m Australian champion. Developing a deep love for sport in childhood, it remained a prominent theme throughout his career; transitioning from athlete to an influential figure in Australian academia, where he held roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Undergraduate), Deputy Provost, and as Co-Director of the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education.
Much of Professor James’ research focused on the quality of student experiences, specifically within higher education. His familiarity with the triumphs and adversities of university life helped him to shape and strengthen the role of sport in the lives of the University’s students, expanding the level of opportunity, accessibility, and equity throughout social and elite sport alike.
Perhaps one of the most impactful contributions during his time on the Advisory Board was his support to establish an Elite Athlete and Artistic Performers Entry Scheme, adding an additional pathway for student-athletes to study at the University. Professor James became an inaugural member of the Elite Athlete Advisory Group and was a staunch advocate for the University’s elite student-athletes.
Throughout his tenure, Richard James was regularly involved in Club Forums, seen within the Sports Precinct supporting club and intervarsity teams, and presenting awards to students at the annual Blues and Sports Awards.
Melbourne University Sport would like to thank Professor James for his dedication, passion and hard work during his time at the University and on the Advisory Board.
