Jemima's story
Science alum Jemima Montag, who is now pursuing a Masters in Public Health at the University, participated in her second Olympics at Paris and won two bronze medals.
After finishing a stunning sixth in the Women's 20km Race Walk at the Tokyo Olympics, Jemima rewrote the Australian record multiple times. She won her second Commonwealth Games gold medal at the 2022 Birmingham Games, scripting a Games Record in the 10,000m Race Walk. But it was the historic silver medal win at the 2023 World Athletic Championships that made her a real medal contender at Paris. “At my first Olympics I aimed for a top-10 finish and came sixth, but after last year’s silver medal at the World Championships, I know that I belong amongst the medals and that my team has the dedication and expertise to get me there,” Jemima said in an interview to the Australian Olympic Committee.
Jemima lived up to the expectations by winning the bronze medal in the Women's 20KM Race Walk with a performance that set a new Australian Record. Days later, she partnered with Rhydian Cowley in the inaugural Marathon Race Walk Mixed Relay. The 26-year-old gave her best in her two legs of the relay to take the pair to a podium finish.
Jemima finished her science degree at the University in 2020 and started her Master of Public Health in 2022. She made her debut for Australia at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and proved her potential by taking out the gold. Along with being a talented athlete and ambitious medical student, Jemima has also engaged herself in social work, helping deliver food to underprivileged families.
