Melbourne University Sport response to UniSport Australia media release

In light of the impact of COVID-19, UniSport Australia has released an update on the status of Nationals Div 1 and 2. The release outlines that Nationals Div 1 and 2 will be postponed for 2020. The full update can be viewed on the UniSport Website:

Whilst the postponement of this year’s major Nationals event is a blow for student-athletes, it does not mean the end of Intervarsity Sport for 2020. Melbourne University Sport has worked hard to become a leader in the intervarsity match space outside of Uni Nationals, establishing more opportunities for student-athletes to represent the University. This has seen us hosting sporting matches and events on campus against our local rivals Monash University in the Big Blue, as well as games against other local Victorian institutions and the occasional international visitors.

The University will continue to strive to be active in the intervarsity space as sport returns to normal and will continue the tradition of students representing Melbourne. When government restrictions permit, we are planning to deliver a number of local and on-campus opportunities in Semester 2 for student-athletes to pull on the Winged Victory uniform with their teammates. More information will be released in the coming weeks about opportunities against our local rival institutions.

Melbourne University Sport continues to monitor the UniSport Australia advice on other events such as Uni Nationals Athletics, Swimming, Snow, T20 Cricket, Distance Running, 3x3 Basketball and the University Basketball League, and will provide updates on these as they come to hand. We also look forward to Melbourne teams returning to Nationals Div 1 and 2 in 2021.
