Intervarsity Sport

Represent the University of Melbourne in sporting competitions across Australia and overseas.

Intervarsity Sport at the University dates back to the first university sporting competitions in Australia in 1870. We provide students with the opportunity to represent the University in a variety of regional, national and international sporting competitions, such as the Big Blue, Varsity Challenge, and Uni Nationals.

We are Winged Victory

The University's sporting teams are collectively known as Winged Victory. Nike, the Greek Godess of Victory is our symbol and a poet Homer's promise, to 'grow in the esteem of future generations" is our motto. Together they create the University's crest, which guides our aspiration to compete and contribute in equal measure. Our representative sport program is recognised as one of Australia's most successful. The majority of inter-university sporting opportunities are provided through the national sporting body UniSport Australia. In recent times, the University has been Overall University National Champion in 2008, 2012 and 2013 and National Runner Up on three other occasions in 2009, 2014 and 2017.

All University of Melbourne representative teams, participants and officials must be approved by Melbourne University Sport, and teams are to be approved according to the Representative Sport Policy. For a student to be eligible, they must be a currently enrolled student at the University of Melbourne. If you would like to represent the university or become a team manager, then please fill out the appropriate form below.

In 2024, the 28th Indigenous Nationals will be held from 23-27 June at the University of Wollongong in Wollongong, NSW. The event will contested in a mixed competition across four sports: touch football, basketball, netball, and volleyball.

National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games (NITESG) began in 1996 as a joint class project between 13 students enrolled in a Diploma of Aboriginal Studies (Community Recreation) at the then Wollotuka School for Aboriginal Studies, The University of Newcastle.

Now referred to as Indigenous Nationals, the event is a week-long multi-sport competition for indigenous student-athletes. The annual event aims to bring together student-athletes from universities across Australia to compete in a variety of sports and ultimately crown one university team the champion of the games. Indigenous Nationals is an amazing environment to not only celebrate the rich sporting culture of indigenous Australia but to also acknowledge the heritage and history of the participating student-athletes.

Eligibility to participate

Indigenous Nationals is open to both staff and currently enrolled students of UniSport Australia member universities.

In maintaining the integrity of the Indigenous Nationals as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander event and in keeping with the rules of engagement, confirmation of Aboriginality is required by each player participating in the competition.
