The University of Melbourne has announced its squad for the 2019 Aon Uni 7s competition.
15 August 2019, Liam Petterson
In the University's second season, it welcomes Australian representatives Ellia Green and Page McGregor as well as a host of returning University of Melbourne student-athletes to complete the squad of 27.
Green earned international acclaim as a member of the Australian team which won the inaugural Rugby Sevens gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, while McGregor is a promising young player who impressed in the first Uni 7s series to earn a call-up to the Australian Women's Sevens Squad.
The University's team provides a pathway for emerging female rugby players, such as last year's co-captain and Bachelor of Arts student Annie Buntine who went on to captain the Rugby Club's premier women's team playing in the Lindroth Cup.
The University's Sport Performance Coordinator, Tom Lutwyche, said that "the University is again excited to provide an elite pathway for our female student-athletes, to play alongside and against the best rugby players in the country."
"It was a challenging first year for our team, but our squad has been working hard to improve across the board and we think we’ll see a much more competitive team on the field this season," said Lutwyche.
"It will be exciting to see the development of some of our players who were new to the sport last year, and have now played a full season of Aon 7’s and also club-rugby."
This year's Uni 7s competition has been trimmed to four rounds with tournaments in Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and the Gold Coast taking place across September and October.
