Team Announced for International Soccer Trip

18 July; MU Sport

A delegation of 17 student-athletes and 3 officials will travel to China to compete in the World Elite University Football Tournament, held at Tsinghua University from 31 July – 8 August.

Student teams from Tsinghua University, Beijing University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, The University of Southern California, Seoul University, National University of Singapore and the University of Melbourne will gather in Tsinghua, China for the friendly tournament.

“We are excited for the opportunity to engage with the global university sporting community”, said University coach Tom Mullumby. “It will be a great opportunity to see how other international universities handle themselves on the sporting field”.

Whilst this is the first sporting endeavour between Melbourne and Tsinghua University, there is already a history of academic partnership. In 2014 an agreement was signed between the two Universities, which has provided opportunities for research collaboration, exchange programs and summer schools.

“Sport often provides opportunities to connect to a competitive, yet friendly environment to foster relationships and shared interests” said Sport Development Manager Rod Warnecke. “This tournament aims to further foster relationships between the competing Universities, and will hopefully have an impact on Chinese students looking to study in Australia with Melbourne being their preferred university”, added Mr Warnecke.
